Fabrication Story:
I was working as an assistant in a glass blowing studio, and in need of an upgrade. Falling back on my carpentry and personal network led to me being a fabricator at a design studio in Chelsea NYC. The client base was high end and exciting, and provided me a chance to become familiar with the term “short turnaround time”.
I was able to use the experience gained from years of wood and metal work and applied it to whatever unique job came through the door. It could be a decorative spiral staircase at Tiffany & Co or a themed window display on Madison Ave. Each project provided a challenge that I could problem solve using my hands and team members.
Project Highlights
Steuben Glass Madison Ave Windows
Client: Geoff Howell Studio, Steuben Glass.
Role: Fabrication, Installation.
Themed Monthly Displays and backdrops.
4 Hour Install
Special Christmas Windows
Steuben Glass was the first client for me that spanned multiple years. The designs coming from Steuben's internal designer were fantastic, and how we turned those visions into a window display was very satisfying. Everything was driven based on a single piece of glass art, and that was something I could get behind. Also these projects exposed me to materials and processes I never thought I would use, opening up possibilities for my own work.
Saks 5th Ave Cosmetics Displays
Client: Geoff Howell Studio, Saks 5th Ave.
Role: Fabrication, Installation.
Branded bi-weekly displays.
Midnight Install
6 main displays, multiple smaller displays.
These projects defined fast paced! A design would come in on a Monday; budgets worked out on Tuesday, drafted and programmed on Wednesday, Assembled on Thursday, Finished Friday morning, and Installed on Friday night when the last customer leaves. Although turn around was quick, it provided an exhilaration of accomplishment that was addicting.
HUGO BOSS Showroom NYC
Client: Geoff Howell Studio, HUGO BOSS.
Role: Fabrication, Installation
Multiple Installations
Interesting use of materials and texture
storytelling through visuals
Multi-media and accent lighting heavy
This showroom conversion was my first professional experience where a larger space was adjusted for the sake of marketing and aesthetic. And a lot of what I learned informed how I approach spatial layout and design today. The fabrication was unique and gave me a good sense of exhibit engineering.
LEGO Tour Play Boat
Client: Creatacor Inc., LEGO
Role: Fabrication
Child friendly materials and coverings
Made to take abuse
Breaks down into smaller sections
LEGO needed a robust unique play area for their Summer Brickation tour, and I was tasked to build it. Although challenging, the results were worth it. This project was one of my last as a fabricator. I was moving into design and wanted to prove that my hands were as much of my process as my mind.
